Factors influencing resilience and burnout among resident physicians - a National Survey

Abstract Background Residency training exposes young physicians to a challenging and high-stress environment, making them vulnerable burnout. Burnout syndrome not only compromises the health wellness of resident but has also been linked prescription errors, reduction in quality medical care, decreased professionalism. This study explored burnout factors influencing resilience among U.S. physicians. Methods A cross-sectional was conducted through an online survey, which distributed all accredited residency programs by Accreditation Council Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The survey included Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC 25), Abbreviated Maslach Inventory, socio-demographic characteristics questions. association between burnout, resilience, were examined. Results 682 respondents had mean CD-RISC score 72.41 (Standard Deviation = 12.1), equivalent bottom 25th percentile general population. Males upper-level trainees more resilient than females junior residents.
